Best news of the week

Since I couldn't join International Blogger Day for Burma on Oct 4 by posting Free Burma Banner, I'd like to post this article from Strait Times. It really took some time (10 to 15 mins) to light this up cos it was really breezy on that night. The media waited patiently until we managed to light all candles up. No wonder SMU's campaign with this pic was on the press though the turnout of the event was not as big as that in NUS.

Explanation to Non-Buddhist:

All Buddhists (at least Theraveda sect) know what this meaning. This pic portrays one of the 8 successes which Buddha had in his life. This one is considered the most difficult and biggest among them. The story of this pic goes like this: Buddha spent 6 years of Austerity to get enlightenment without success and so He decided to go for the moderate way of "Ah Na Pa Na meditation" (I don't know the English term but this is the current method of meditation in Buddhism). On the night before He got enlightened aka became a Buddha, Saturn came with his devil warriors in billion and trillion troops to disturb His meditation. However, He managed to ignore the disturbance using "Mittar" (most equivlant laymen's term should be "Love" though the meaning is a bit different). He wasn't angry with Saturn and forgave him with His Love which was shielding Buddha from being attacked by his warriors. To cut the story short, He beat Saturn and his warriors, and became Buddhahood before dawn.

Now you should know why we Buddhists found this cartoon amusing cos the junta head, riding his Mercedes Benz like Saturn his elephant, is threatening Buddhism because, although Burma is the strongest Buddhist country, his army is killing the monks and arresting those who say Long Live Buddhism. I was really amused as well as shocked to read in some blogs that in future all Burmese citizens will have to change their religion from Buddhism into Militarism which everyone has to worship or die.
