F*cking noisy library and others
It's week 12 now and everyone is mugging and stressed. There is no free group study room in school, so I came to the library which is designed to accommodate group study as well as individual. Knowing that group study means gossiping and talking out non-sense loud, I came to level 4 individual study area with many cubicles for those who wanna concentrate. I don't know it's the stupid designer or the library. There are a few sofas and project room around this area where f*cking inconsiderate people from a particular race (I'm not a racist but everyone knows whom I'm referring to) have been shouting and screaming for hours. Don't they have things to study or do for their projects? Even if they don't, can't they know the whole area is full of people studying for their incoming tests and projects? Not only do they free ride in projects - coming to meeting late, missing deadlines and contributing non-sense to the discussion, but they are the main source of noise pollution in the library. Did I also mention that they talk non-sense in class too (with the weirdest accent some more)?
I gave up complaining to the library management cos they are also f*cking lazy people whom school spends our money on. I complained once and guess what they reply. They told me to talk to the people who are talking so loud cos the library policy is to encourage discussion among students and thus such noise level should be expected. NON-SENSE! Am I paying school fees to remind the students personally in the library to keep the volume down?
I'm quite ashamed that this management university has the lousiest management with the most inconsiderate students! I think the student recruitment system has something wrong or the education we receive here make more and more students inconsiderate to others. It's not just the above mentioned race (though they are the most annoying group) that is inconsiderate, my own race, whites, blacks and also the locals. I know such behavior depends on individuals but the chance of seeing such people at SMU is higher than university with more collectivistic culture.
I agree with MM Lee that Asia can't copy western democracy which doesn't deserve in this society with different culture from the west. Let's say freedom of expression. The west think it's their right to express their ideas, opinions and feelings while Asian still believes that we have to abide by the social norms, rules and traditions, thus we don't express freely. But, are the westerners wrong? No, they have the own control. They have their own right to express as long as their expression doesn't affect other people's right. So, what happen when we copy their democracy blindly? We forget our traditional and social norms, rules, etc. and just get our own right even (or most of the time) at the expense of other people's right. Asian norms might suppress our human rights but they prevent others from being affected by those who violate the rules. But, now we not only violate our old norms, but neglect the fact that other people also have their own right which we shouldn't abuse. Nowadays, we see a lot of young couples kissing and doing everything, which you can imagine can happen in bed, in public except for still wearing clothes on. It's their right to display their affections to the other party even in public. But, what do you think of people blocking the entrance in the train while kissing the other half and not giving way to other passengers cos they don't wanna disrupt their acts or feelings; not keeping one side on the escalator in rush hour; listening to mp3 with speakers inside the train; not setting phone into silent mode in class so that they won't miss important calls, etc? I'm used to such scenes after living here for 4 years. But my exchange friends from the very traditional or conservative society are very surprised to see such things. They think we should respect the public. But, what will they say if I tell them it's our own right to do such thing and we believe in democracy? I don't know what such Asian friends will reply me, but I dare not say this in front of my western friends cos we obviously neglect other people's right and who are we to claim that we value democracy.
Like such cultural-value miss match, forced American culture in Asian society like SMU is also another disaster. While American students participate in class, they wanna clarify their doubt or contribute to the class so that everyone learns something. In British system, we just follow the lecture without asking question in class, so people might not learn if the instructor miss out something to say. While American system of participation in class is blindly copied yet students don't speak out as they are brought up not to do so, there is something which school has to do to make this system feasible. And this is participation score. With that measure, Asian students either Chinese, Indian, Malay, Burmese, Indonesian, VietNamese, etc. who are so kiasu will talk cock in class just for the sake of the score and not contributing it to the class. The system works and the classes are very active but non-sense! Professors said they'll give marks to qualitative comments only and not to the amount of times we participate. But, how much can they ensure? My friend who's a TA reminded me for not speaking in class as much as others. I told him they are speaking non-sense and the useful comments from so many times of participations are as few as those of a person who speaks less but only when there is a point for the class to learn. Then my friend said "I don't care. As long as you speak once, I give one mark no matter what the content is." In the end, will the prof know who speaks what?
That's how SMU students are trained in 4 years. As a result, what do people or employers say about SMU students. At first, they said we are outspoken and vocal. Now they realize that SMU students are fluff!
Sh*t! It's 10 pm already and I haven't studied for my quiz at 8.30 am tomorrow morning. When will the f*cking xxxxxx girl shut her mouth up in the library?
